How to OCR a PDF without uploading it

  1. 1Choose or drop a scanned PDF, or photos of pages. Nothing is sent anywhere.
  2. 2Choose the language of the text: Arabic and English, Arabic only, or English only.
  3. 3Optionally list the pages, and keep Skip pages that already have text on.
  4. 4Select Make searchable, then download the PDF or copy the recognized text.

What happens to your file

Each page is read by the text recognition engine inside this browser tab, and the words are added as an invisible layer over the page. Your file is never uploaded, and the working copy is cleared when you close the tab.

Frequently asked questions

Which languages can it read?

Arabic and English, each on its own or both on the same page. With both, each part of a line is read by the language model that recognizes it better, so a bilingual contract comes out right. Handwriting is not supported.

Will my pages look different?

No. Each page keeps its picture exactly as it was. The recognized text is added as an invisible layer, placed over the words it belongs to, so you can search, select and copy it in any PDF reader.

How accurate is it?

Clear printed text is usually read very well. Blurry or dark photos, very small print and decorative fonts give poorer results. For photos of paper, use Scan to PDF first: it straightens and cleans up the pages, which helps the recognition.

Why does it take a while?

Recognizing text is heavy work, and it is done on your own device. The first time also downloads the engine and the language models (about 6 MB), which are then kept so OCR works offline.

Is my document uploaded for OCR?

No. The text is recognized in your browser. Only the engine and the language models come from this site; your file never leaves your device.

Does OCR PDF work offline?

Yes, after you've used it once while online. The engine and the language models (about 6 MB) are saved then, and later jobs run without internet.
