How to use it
To protect a file, add it, choose a password and repeat it, decide whether printing and copying are allowed, and save. To remove a password, add the file, enter its password, and save an unlocked copy.
How it works
Your file is processed entirely in your browser, on your device. It is never uploaded to a server, and we never see its contents or keep any part of it.
Frequently asked questions
How strong is the protection?
The file is encrypted with AES-256, the strongest standard encryption PDF supports. Anyone without the password cannot open it.
What if I forget the password?
It cannot be recovered. Nothing is stored anywhere, not even a hint, so keep the password somewhere safe.
Can I stop people printing or copying?
You can set the permissions, and most apps respect them. They are not a lock: anyone who has the password can remove them.
Can I remove a password I do not know?
No. To remove protection you must provide the password. This tool unlocks your own files, it does not guess passwords.
Will my PDF open in Acrobat, Preview and Chrome?
Yes. The file uses standard encryption and opens with its password in the common PDF viewers. Arabic passwords work too.
Is my password sent anywhere?
No. The password is used on your device to encrypt or decrypt the file and is never sent or stored.
